Our Review:
The Nordictrack ACT elliptical is a dual side flywheel design - and so popular that NordicTrack has kept it around (with yearly updates) for the past 4 years.
Unlike a standard elliptical design which has one large flywheel in front or in back of the machine, this design uses 2 smaller flywheels on either side of the pedals.
The main advantage to this design is that you stand more upright on the machine. Some experts say that this can help you actually burn more calories since you're leaning less on the elliptical for support.
Another benefit is that the foot pedals are spaced closer together - which feels more natural and comfortable for many people.
Like many NordicTrack machines, the ACT also comes iFit LIVE compatible. This means you can connect your machine to the Internet and download new workouts (i.e. from celebrity trainers like Jillian Michaels), track your fitness results, reach goals and even map out new routes using Googlemaps.
You also get an adjustable stride length with this crosstrainer. You can choose from an 18, 20 or 22" stride. This makes it a great choice for multiple families as everyone can choose the most comfortable stride for them.
It's also handy if you want to work different muscle groups one day with a short stride and then a longer 22" stride the next. So you have some good versatility here.
The console itself is of average size - but still very easy to read from any angle and backlit. You get a constant display of your speed, time, distance, resistance, pulse and calories burned. There's also a racetrack display that many users like to have.
Another benefit to this design is that it is more compact than standard crosstrainers - coming in at just over half the length of a regular elliptical. So if space if limited in your fitness area, this might be a good option.
Are there any drawbacks?
If you don't have wireless internet in your home, you won't get full use from the iFit LIVE (there are still 26 built-in workout programs that come with this model you can use). And be aware that the iFit module is extra.
